Nadir Afonso - Sem Limites / Without Limits (1)

Laura Afonso

The creator of a unique body of work that was constructed within the context of international art and possessed a consistently pioneering spirit, Nadir Afonso is one of the most important Portuguese artists of the twentieth century. In the year in which he reaches his ninetieth birthday, this retrospective exhibition examines the first half of his artistic career, which took place between 1930 and 1960. It was a path of personal learning and empirical evolution, during which he completed his education and established himself as a professional in the field of architecture. Drawing turns out to be the strong link in this dual relationship, the foundation of his studies and the means by which he expressed himself on the support.

Arranged in thematic groups following a chronological order, this selection reveals the surprisingly contemporary nature of his work in relation to the surrealist aesthetic, or kinetic art, and the break which was brought about through geometric abstraction. For the first time, around one hundred works are being brought together, a great many of them unknown to the general public, as well as an extended series of studies and documents that make it possible to analyze and gain greater understanding of the artist's creative process, namely, the way in which he simultaneously developed different periods. Throughout the exhibition, it is also possible to gain insight into the interconnecting elements of Nadir's methodology, namely, repetition and inversion, in accordance with the dialectical basis of thesis, synthesis, and antithesis, indispensable components in the purifying of forms.

This process is sustained by unengaged reflection and theoretical-philosophical analysis, formulated by the artist himself, through which Nadir defends the geometric essence of art, the pre-conscious or intuitive skills used to order compositions, and practical work as a guiding thread to a rational methodology. His is a phenomenological aesthetic with a humanist face that presupposes the following: the immutable relations of geometric laws, universal laws which exist in nature and are essential to the attainment of harmony, and the changeable relations of the functions and requirements that allow perfection to be reached. These are the phenomena through which the "art [that] purifies the spirit and dignifies mankind" is accessed.

A PRIMEIRA MODERNIDADE / THE FIRST MODERNITY

Nadir Afonso began his visual experiments in the 19305, when he was an adolescent. His first works, which were open-air paintings in the impressionist style, depicted views of Chaves, his home town. Early on, his attention was drawn to architectural forms, revealing his grasp of geometric elements.

Also dating from this period are landscape depictions of the rural environment in which he grew up, after which he moved quickly to o more expressionist aesthetic and showed evidence of a further element that would come to structure his artistic career: movement. It is surprising to find in this group of works an initiatory rhythmic marking of forms, arranged in a linear sequence, with the introduction of the additional concept of movement guided by mathematical precision, which he would explore later.

In 1938, he went to study architecture at the Escola de Belas-Artes do Porto, where he joined the Grupo dos Independentes. He took part in exhibitions, contributing works whose quality and modernity were recognized at the time, allowing him to sell one of his paintings, A Ribeira, to a museum collection for the first time. In noteworthy creations such as Vila Nova de Gaia (1942) and Cais de Santos (19441, Nadir progressed towards more simplified content and the notation of forms and parallel lines that revealed a path leading away from landscape art towards o more refined aesthetic that paid more attention to geometric forms. Since then, the theme of urban life and the city has retained a privileged place in Nadir's world, to the detriment of human figuration.

A APROXIMAÇÃO À ESTÉTICA SURREALISTA THE APPROCH TO THE SURREALIST /AESTHETIC

The first works with which Nadir Afonso mode incursions into abstraction date from the former half of the 1940s. In part, he was exploring a more liberated language, on oneiric lyricism with a pioneering surrealist quality, and in part he was turning to themes of a surrealist nature to undertake a chromatic geometrization of forms. In 1945 he pointed Évora Surrealista, in which he evoked the aesthetic influence of the international movement. Nadir Afonso went to Paris in 1946, when the surrealist movement was gearing up for a second international foray. With the support of the Brazilian artist Cândido Portinari, he was awarded a scholarship by the French government to study in the French capital. Shortly afterwards, he began working at the architect Le Corbusier's ATBAT studio, an opportunity that would define his career and provide him with future contacts.

He met, among others, Picasso, Calder, Max Ernst, Fernand Léger and André Wogenscky, who pleaded with Le Corbusier to allow Nadir more time to dedicate to painting. A lover of this practice, and a visual artist himself, Le Corbusier permitted Nadir to spend the mornings pointing. Nadir's interest in surrealism sprang only from on investigative impulse and a search for artistic freedom. He remained outside the spirit of the movement. He opted for on isolated, individualist path marked by a spatial quest within on abstract aesthetic that moved towards a geometrization of shapes and colours.
